BUSINESS AND MARKETING
Wouldn’t you like to be prepared for a good job after high school or a good part-time job during college? That is what the Business Department offers. Our main goal is to prepare students for employment in the business world. Even if you are a college-bound student, chances are you will have to work to offset the cost so you should have some business knowledge. Likewise, you should have a basic understanding of business, as over half of the people in college are pursuing a business-related major. Business also aids you in personal affairs—offering training in keeping records and typing personal correspondence as well as how to prepare word-processed course work.

Course Description: This course is more individualized than Word Processing/Keyboarding 1 and will include several units: correspondence (letters and memos), report forms used for other courses, tabulated displays of data and compositions as well as drills to improve speed and accuracy in keyboarding and proofreading. Proper keyboarding techniques, timed writings to measure speed and accuracy and several projects will be used to demonstrate the principles of keyboarding and data arrangement learned. Students will:

Course Description: This course will develop in students the skills, attributes, and aptitudes necessary to prepare them for post-secondary education and careers. This experience will help students understand the importance of making good post-secondary education/career choices based on the research they conduct. Course Description: This course is designed for those students interested in majoring in business or owning their own business. Accounting is the language of business. An understanding of accounting is important for success in business. It will also prepare students for college-level business courses. This course includes the accounting procedures for starting a business and creating financial statements for a service and merchandising business. Course Description: Successful completion of Accounting 1 and 2 will earn a student 4 College in the School credits. A practice set is completed at the beginning of the course to give an “on-the-job” experience. This course will cover the accounting cycle using five special journals. Additional units covered are: correct accounting procedures for bad debts, depreciation, disposing of assets, inventories, notes, interest, and accrued revenue and expenses. Units using automated accounting will be included. Students will be evaluated on their daily work by completing problems, unit tests, and participation. In this semester, a good portion of the grade will be on the practice set and performance on an audit test given on “the student’s understanding of the practice set.” Students will:

Course Description: This course is designed as an individualized study group where the students will refine fundamental accounting procedures. They will then delve into partnership accounting and specialized accounting areas such as inventory, payroll, and voucher systems. There is also a practice set utilizing automated accounting which gives students “realistic experience” in computerized accounting. Course Description: This course is designed for those interested in developing skills and competencies needed for careers in marketing, merchandising, and management. This “hands-on” class is geared to meet the needs of students who plan on continuing their education in business at the college level, as well as those who wish to enter the job market upon completion of high school. Areas of study include advertising, sales, human relations, and leadership. The class is project oriented. Textbooks are not used. Students considering Marketing 1 should be self motivated and active participators. Marketing 1 students are encouraged to become active members of DECA. Course Description: DECA is the Association of Marketing Students. This course will concentrate on National DECA’s program of competitive events. The course will focus on National DECA’s Public Relations, Free Enterprise, Civic Consciousness, Creative Marketing, and Learn and Earn Chapter Projects. It will also teach skills and competencies needed for success in DECA’s competitive events program at the district, state, and national levels. Students will have the opportunity to work on leadership skills as they run and/or help campaign for local, district, and state DECA office positions. Students will be responsible for the management and operation of the School Store. Attendance at the fall conference, district, and state competition is required. Those qualifying for national competition are encouraged, but not required to attend. Students interested in this class must have demonstrated active involvement in DECA as a Marketing 1 and/or Marketing 2 student. Students who will be taking Marketing 1 second semester are eligible to apply for this course. Registration is by application only! Applications can be picked up in Room 210. Students who enroll in this class and have a job should also sign up for Marketing On-The-Job Training. A $20 DECA membership fee is assessed to include competitions that are outside the school day as part of co-curricular activities. Course Description: Students enrolled in an advanced Marketing class have the option of receiving a credit for a part-time retail or business-related job. Students may choose to be placed in jobs which relate to their present career choice or may work at their current place of employment. Some students may wish to be released early from school to work at their jobs while others may stay in school for up to seven class periods, working only evenings and weekends. For students to receive credit for On-The-Job Training, they must take and pass an advanced level Marketing class, work an average of ten hours per week, and complete a job manual. The On-The-Job Training experience will supplement the competencies and skills students receive in all Marketing classes. The student will be evaluated jointly by their immediate supervisor at work and by the teacher/coordinator to determine a quarter grade. Students will:
